A Midday Atlantic is a young band from San Diego, California. They have that sunny California sound but anchor it with some solid vocals and guitar work. They kick off their debut EP The Differencewith "Who Are You Now" which displays a guitar sound reminiscent of Acceptance. The thing that immediately pops out at me is their catchy chorus lines. There is nothing too eccentric; just clear straightforward hooks. They also utilize the gang background vocals that seem to be very prevalent in today’s music. At times Miguel Ramirez’s vocals on "Nothing Burns" call to mind early Armor for Sleep.
"Lost Time And A Blindly Given Birthright" is a solid song but presents nothing new. The band displays their softer side on "The City" but keeps an edge with their guitar sound. Kevin Weiss’ drumming serves as the glue to bring the song to a gentle close. We come to the finale with "The Resting Potential" which I feel would have worked better as a transition into "The City" rather than a closer because it does not come off strong enough to bring the curtains down with a roaring ovation.
It’s not difficult to find a new band sprouting up in your backyard these days. What separates the good ones from the rest of the flock is hard work and good songwriting. From what A Midday Atlantic presents on their debut EP, they have a chance to be rise above the rest but only time will tell if they can grow and truly become a unique entity worthy of longevity.
