When I found out I had to review a CD by a band called Low vs. Diamond, I was expecting a shitty hardcore band, and let’s be honest that is what you probably expected too when you opened up this review. Well, it was not shitty nor a hardcore band. Low vs. Diamond is an indie rock group originally from Colorado. When founding members vocalist/guitarist Lucas Field, keyboardist Tad Moore and drummer Howie Diamond graduated from the University of Colorado, they moved to California and started to play out more before signing to Sony. Combining a classic rock sound with more contemporary almost Killers sound, the band’s debut has some down moments here and there, but is quite refreshing.
The vocals are top notch and sound like Jarrod Grobel and Brandon Flowers are making out. Slowly rising and falling throughout the tapestry of the song, the vocals are what will really drive this band. Sometimes deep (“Sometimes Sister”), sometimes surface level (“Cinema Tonight”) and other times downright corny and dumb (“Killer B”) the vocals and lyrics will make or break this band for fans.
Musically speaking the band sounds awesome. They each seem to work together within the musical flow of the songs and they all kind of bow to the vocals but still are very much in the listener’s face. With musical influences that seem to range from U2 to the Killers, this band seem to be part of the next wave of indie rock bands to hit the mainstream.
This is a more than passable debut for a group of young guys who seem to have found their musical niche. If you are a fan of the Strokes, the Honorary Title or the Killers, say hello to your new favorite band.
