Karmella's Game

AVEC

February 16, 2007 @ Sidebar Tavern in Baltimore, MD

Overall Rating: 9.5

Music Quality: 9.5

Production: 8.0

Any time AVEC and Karmella's Game are on the same bill my mind gets thrown for a loop. This mainly happens because it's mind-boggling to me that these shows do not sell out. In my humble opinion, these are the best two bands in Baltimore, and both of these bands are flying under everyone's radar, at least for now.

AVEC's set was, as always, short and sweet. The bulk of their set contained songs from their upcoming LP (which will be released sometime in 2007). They played "House" and "Bozarth", both from their upcoming album, and both of these songs were incredible. The first time I heard "House," I was convinced that it would be the hit. However, after hearing "Bozarth" a few more times, I have decided that this song is the hit. The main hook of this song goes, "there's no line between the line," and it is absolute rock n roll bliss. The musicianship of these four individuals goes above and beyond the norm of rock and roll, and their live sounds shines through as a result of their individual talent. Needless to say, when these four rock n roller get together, jaws hit the floor and fists swing to the air. Be on the look-out for AVEC's new album, and be on the look-out for tour dates. You will not want to miss them if they journey through your hometown.

Karmella's Game played right after AVEC, and it was business as usual. Point blank, this band is indie-rock/pop. Their shows are always high-energy, and their shows are always a riot. There are always crazy people dancing and singing and acting like idiots, you know, what a rock show is supposed to be.

And to keep with the theme of new material, Karmella's Game played a few new tunes, too. I like these songs more and more after each listen. They are definitely heading in a different direction than their last album, "The Art of Distraction," but from what I've heard, it will be just as amazing, if not better. One thing is for sure, if Nintendo doesn't offer them an endorsement deal, it will be Nintendo's loss.

Overall, it was a great night. I was able to hang out with a bunch of amazing people, have a few drinks, listen to amazing rock music and for the moment, I was able to escape reality. A great rock show usually does that.
